Charles Nob Hill is a venue known well to this organisation, thanks to a couple of dinner meetings held here over the years. It is one of the best choices for the Bond traveler. The atmosphere is perhaps the most exclusive anywhere in San Francisco and, fortunately, little has been altered during an ownership change a few years ago when the name was changed from Le Club. This is a small, quiet restaurant serving excellent French Contemporary cuisine. The bar is petite, with 4-5 stools and maybe 1 table, unless the dinner business is really high that evening, when every table is called into dining service. Our barman Curtis mixed his Bond martini with Grey Goose vodka, which he shook to an icy cold temparature, but that still didn't quite take away a slight harshness in Grey Goose that we noted at other houses as well. It is a super-premium grain vodka, and among the most awarded on the market, but just didn't delight our our palates. Execution and atmosphere, however, were excellent and Charles Nob Hill is highly recommended overall by the Commanders Club. (Chief of Staff Cooley notes: During a couple of the times I have dined here recently, I noticed the disturbing trend of well-heeled couples bringing their pre-school age children to dinner. This is highly detrimental to the atmosphere at Charles, and I would suggest you mention it when making a reservation at Charles Nob Hill if you share my sensibilities.) |
