007's martini is a thing only half understood in popular culture.  He does indeed enjoy the oft-quoted "medium dry, vodka martini, shaken not stirred, with a twist of lemon peel" but that made its first appearance in the world of 007 in the novel Dr. No.   However in Bond's first outing, Casino Royale, he concocts the really unique martini that he later calls a Vesper in honor of the woman who he falls for in the field and who will soon double cross him.  Like its namesake, this is a drink you shouldn't turn your back on.

      The Vesper

      • 3 measures Gordon's Gin
            - Try to source the U.K. variant for both its green glass bottle as well as somewhat higher proof

      • 1 measure Vodka
           - Type not specified.  Commanders Club currently likes Grey Goose

      • 1/2 measure Kina Lillet
           - Pre-1985 stocks are very bitter thanks to a
preponderance of quinine; today the quinine has been backed off and you will want to specify the white varietal, Lillet Blanc

Shake with ice until very cold and serve in a deep champagne goblet (see right) with the requisite large, thin slice of lemon peel

The proper goblet for a Vesper - not the usual v-shaped martini.
