Second-year running back James Davis has been placed on the Redskins' reserve/left team list.
Davis left camp without telling coaches on Tuesday, according to head coach Mike Shanahan.
"We came in and his roommates said his clothes were gone," Shanahan said. "I heard he is somewhere in Atlanta...I don't expect him back. I think he's retired from football, but that's just my guess.
Davis did not play in last Friday's preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With the additions of rookies Roy Helu, Evan Royster and Shaun Draughn in camp, Davis likely faced long odds to make the Redskins' roster.
