Redskins Sign Jones, Waive Minnifield

The Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent cornerback David Jones. In a corresponding move, the Redskins also waived/injured rookie cornerback Chase Minnifield.

Minnifield (6-0, 185) was signed as an undrafted free agent on May 3, and was one of the standout performers to his coaches and teammates during offseason workouts.

If Minnifield is not claimed off waivers, he will automatically revert to the team's Reserve/Injured list.

Jones (6-0, 197) was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round (145th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Wingate (N.C.).

In five NFL seasons, he has played in 54 regular season games with 12 starts, and recorded 75 tackles (60 solo), one interception, 10 passes defensed, one fumble recovery and 13 special teams tackles.

In 2011, Jones played in the final five games of the season for the Jacksonville Jaguars, finishing with one solo tackle and four special teams tackles.

He spent the preseason with the Jaguars before being placed on the Reserve/Injured list on Sept. 3, eventually being waived while designated as injured on Sept. 10. He re-signed as a free agent with the Jaguars on Dec. 3.

Jones played collegiately at Wingate from 2003-06, where he was a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference performer, appearing in 40 games with 28 starts. He recorded 110 tackles and 15 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns.

Jones was born Sept. 19, 1985, and attended Greenville (S.C.) H.S., where he finished with 10 career interceptions.
