Smoot Among Inactives vs. Philly

Cornerback Fred Smoot and defensive end Phillip Daniels were among the Redskins' inactive players for Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Smoot suffered a hamstring injury during practice last week and he was downgraded to questionable on Saturday.

With Smoot inactive, the Redskins started Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers at cornerback, with veteran David Macklin serving in nickel packages.

Daniels had been downgraded to doubtful on Saturday. He suffered a foot injury in last Sunday's season opener and did not practice all week.

Demetric Evans started in place of Daniels.

The Redskins' complete list of inactives was as follows: Smoot, safety Vernon Fox, defensive end Lorenzo Alexander, wide receivers Reche Caldwell and Shaun Bodiford, tight end Cody Boyd and Daniels.

Fox was listed as doubtful heading into the game due to a groin injury.

For the Eagles, Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard was listed as inactive, as expected. With Sheppard out, the Eagles turned to veteran William James to replace him in the lineup.

Cornelius Griffin and Shawn Springs both started Monday night's game at Philadelphia.

During preseason, coaches had been cautious with both Griffin and Springs, stressing it was paramount that the veteran defenders be available for all 16 games.

Despite not playing most of preseason, both Griffin and Springs are in excellent condition, assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams said.

"They are professionals that understand how important the offseason was," Williams said. "They had a really good offseason and they are both in really good shape.

"We also have taken the pounding off of those guys [in preseason], which is really good."

The Redskins wore their burgundy jerseys for Monday night's game against Philadelphia. It was the first time this year that the team wore burgundy jerseys.

The Redskins wore their burgundy jerseys just once last season, in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium.

That game was also a nationally televised game, a Sunday night contest. The Redskins lost to the Cowboys 27-10.
