Statement By The Washington Redskins On The Passing Of Tommy Mason

STATEMENT BY THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS

ON THE PASSING OF TOMMY MASON:

 

On behalf of his family, the Washington Redskins are saddened to announce the passing of former Redskins running back Tommy Mason.

Mason was selected first overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1961 NFL Draft, becoming the first draft selection in Vikings franchise history. The three-time Pro Bowler played 11 NFL seasons, including tenures with the Vikings (1961-66), Los Angeles Rams (1967-70) and Redskins (1971).

"Tommy was a great teammate and valued member of the Washington Redskins and the NFL," President Bruce Allen said. "Our entire organization sends its condolences to his family."

Mason, a native of Lake Charles, La., is survived by his wife, Karen, his three sons, Buck, Ryan and Taylor, his grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
