Washington Redskins Morning Clips: 8/27

A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

--Yesterday, the Redskins learned that incumbent punt returner Richard Crawford faces a nine month recovery from a knee injury that affects his ACL, LCL and MCL. The Redskins waived Crawford yesterday with an injury designation, and he is likely to be placed on Injured Reserve after reportedly clearing waivers.

-- Who do you want to see return punts for the Redskins this season? According to head coach Mike Shanahan, the job is pretty much up for grabs, joking that he tried out 14 returners in practice yesterday..

--It's officially make or break time for the final sports on the roster. Running back Evan Royster was hurt and sat out last game, but said that he hopes to suit up and play Thursday. Head coach Mike Shanahan said safety Brandon Meriweather will play on Thursday night against the Bucs, with the plan for him to play the first half.

--Need your Robert Griffin III quotes? You may have to wait a week as he not scheduled to take the podium before Thursday night's game, a product of a very short week of preparation.

--Outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan is no flash in the pan, and the team has likely only scratched the surface on his long-term potential.

--Sophomore running back Alfred Morris has 335 NFL carries under his belt, but still remembers the uncertainty that he faced at this point last year.

--With five more moves needed to get the team down to 75 by 4 p.m. today, here's a look at the state of the roster on the eve of roster cuts. Here's another perspective.  Injuries helped the team avoid cutting ties with more players.

--Yesterday, the team parted ways with veteran receiver Donté Stallworth, who said he wasn't surprised to be let go, but was grateful for his opportunity in Washington.

--Rookie safety Bacarri Rambo has no shortage of confidence but said he is encouraged after back-to-back strong showings against Pittsburgh and Buffalo.

--Who plays emergency quarterback for the Redskins? Why the rash of Lisfranc injuries? These answers and more in this week's reporter mailbag.

--Did Packers' outside linebacker Clay Matthews actually call Robert Griffin III 'what's his name?' You decide, but it was probably an unintended slight.

--One local columnist writes that Redskins captain London Fletcher personifies the struggle between NFL grit and long-term health in the concussion discussion.

--Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins returned to practice on Monday, but was limited and reportedly aiming for a Week 1 return.

--We are now in the final days of the Redskins roster competitions, so here is a final look at running backs and punt returner, two hotly-contested battles.

--Do you agree with Robert Griffin III's #NFLRank placement at No. 46 among offensive players? The lowball ranking likely stems from uncertainty around his return.

--A former NFL team executive weighs in on the Redskins name discussion.

--Veteran receiver Santana Moss knows Andre Johnson, as they both hail from the University of Miami. Moss told reporters yesterday that he sees shades of his former teammate in new teammate Pierre Garçon, who he expects to have an Andre Johnson-caliber season.

--In a general wrap of the Redskins preseason, one national reporter notes that both Robert Griffin III and the read-option will be staples in this year's offensive gameplan once again.

--Redskins center Will Montgomery and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo are the best players respectively on offense and defense. At least according to initial Madden rankings.

--Finally healthy and productive, Redskins second-year cornerback Chase Minnifield officially closes in on his first NFL regular season game.
