Last May, when Doug Williams, Redskins Super Bowl XXII MVP, stood at the podium at Raymond James Stadium for his induction into the Buccaneers Ring Of Honor, he spoke about his teammates and his career and his gratefulness for getting to play in the NFL.
By the end, once the requisite questions were asked, reporters inquired about his relationship with first-overall draft pick Jameis Winston.
Since winning the Heisman trophy two years ago, Winston has been in frequent contact with Williams, developing their relationship at social banquets and over the phone, which Williams admitted can be tricky sometimes.
"I'm not a big texter but he's at that texting age," Williams said. "I try to call him but he never answers so he forces me to text. We've been close. Even through the process that he's been through. I remember one text, he asked how I handled certain things so I called and talked to him one day. I believe in him as an individual, as a young man. Last night I came to town and the first guy calling me was Jameis Winston."
Winston admitted Wednesday that he stills talks to Williams occasionally as he goes through the challenges of his first NFL season.
"It's just a privilege just to talk to him because he once was here, ended up having a great career in Washington winning the Super Bowl, and just what he means to my life as being the first African-American quarterback to win the Super Bowl, that means a lot to me," he said. "I definitely have a pretty stable relationship with him."
Williams, of course, has been helpful in guiding plenty of young quarterbacks, most recently Cardale Jones, who appeared in an ESPN feature with Williams last year as he contemplated entering the NFL. For Winston, Williams has taught him to relax and embrace his style of play.
"Well, just snap and clear," Winston said of what he's learned. "You can't stress too much. You've got to be yourself and play ball. You've got to apply yourself and play ball."
I'm sure for just Sunday, Williams would like to see the Redskins defense make that a difficult task.
