Every year in the NFL, 32 teams fight their way through a 16-game regular season, with the hopes that they can advance to the postseason, and make it to -- and win -- the biggest event in sports: the Super Bowl.
It's extremely difficult to make it to the Super Bowl, let alone win year after year, so when teams, like the Washington Redskins, can go on a run of success over a certain number of years, those are times those organizations cherish forever.
Keeping in the spirit of championship football, Fox Sports' Cameron DaSilva came up with a list of the nine most successful dynasties in NFL history, and coming in at No. 9 are the Redskins.
The postseason run Washington had from 1982-1991 is simply jaw dropping, and DaSilva breaks it down quite succinctly:
Playoff appearances: 7
Super Bowl appearances: 4
Super Bowl wins: 3
"The Redskins of the '80s and early '90s get overlooked fairly often because they didn't win a whole bunch of titles with the same quarterback," DaSilva said. "Instead, they went the unconventional route to win three Super Bowls with three different QBs: Joe Theismann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien. Jay Schroeder even contributed a great deal in 1987, but it was Williams who started and won the Super Bowl.
"Joe Gibbs was the mainstay at the helm, orchestrating each Super Bowl-winning team as the head coach," DaSilva said. "Their peaks were as good as any. Winning three Super Bowls in 10 years with seven playoff appearances isn't something many teams have done."
One current player that's hungry for a world championship is wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Jackson is currently a free agent, but has said that he would love to return to the Redskins because he senses the organization is heading in the right direction, which is toward creating a dynasty similar to the one DaSilva talked about.
"I see what the Super Bowl is like and I would love to be on that level," Jackson said. "Here we have built that camaraderie, and are very close to being a championship-winning team. As long as we can keep pieces to the puzzle together, I think this team and group of guys we have together can be very special down the road."
