Exactly a week after general manager Scot McCloughan began his first draft with the Redskins, some of the team's legendary quarterbacks shared their thoughts on his direction.

"I like the draft picks," Sonny Jurgensen said.  "It was the first time they've addressed the needs that they've had. They've done their homework. It looks like, to me, that he will have a better idea next year of what he needs because these will be his players playing."

Jurgensen also believes it will take some time for McCloughan's vision to take shape but hopes new quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh can guide Robert Griffin III to new heights this year.

"I see it taking a couple of years," Jurgensen said of the front office's plans. "They certainly have to hope Matt Cavanaugh can do a good job with Robert and he needs to get him on the right page and if they can do that that would help because if not, they're going to have the same problems they've had in the past. You want him to stay healthy and play well."

Billy Kilmer, who played under center for the Redskins from 1971-78, likes Brandon Scherff as the team's first-round selection, mostly because it will give Griffin III time to operate in the pocket.

"They've done a good job by drafting that tackle for them," Kilmer said. "They need two or three more 300 pounders and if they get that I think Robert will be just fine. We all know he's got the talent. But he can't be running around back there trying to get away from the rush. He's got to learn to stay in the pocket and throw the ball. He's got a good enough arm. He can't be running around because he'll get hurt again."
