LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation announced today that Freedom High School (Woodbridge) head football coach, Darryl Overton, has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week presented by Inova Sports Medicine for the week of Oct. 10.

Coach Overton is in his second year as head football coach at Freedom, after serving as Defensive Coordinator at Colonial Forge High School from 2009-15. In their last matchup, the Eagles improved to 5-1 after defeating C.D. Hylton High School by a score of 33-28.

Director of Student Activities, Steve Bryson, said that Overton motivates his student-athletes by his "preparation and effort; no excuses, no explanations" philosophy. Overton believes that if his student-athletes prepare and give maximum effort, there will be no need for excuses and explanations. "Through this philosophy, Coach Overton believes that every student-athlete can reach their individual maximum potential on and off the field," said Bryson.

Coach Overton combines his passion for football with his love of giving back to the community. Overton runs his own youth football organization and training program. He also takes time to visit local elementary schools and read to various classes throughout the school year. During the holidays, the Freedom High School coaching staff delivers food to several local families in need.

In his everyday instruction to his student-athletes, Coach Overton emphasizes the importance of safety while on the field. Overton utilizes Heads Up Football tackling techniques and ensures his players and coaches are up-to-date when it comes to proper tackling skills and fundamentals.

Ultimately, Bryson credits Overton's enthusiasm and dedication to the game of football, along with his ability to relate to his student-athletes, as his greatest assets. Freedom High School's football team is currently off to their best season start in school history.
