LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation announced today that Dameon Powell, head football coach at Charles Herbert Flowers High School (Prince George's County Public Schools) has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week, presented by Inova Sports Medicine, for the week of October 2.

Entering his second season as head coach at Flowers High School, Powell has a reputation for building successful football programs. Before coming to Flowers, he helped turn the program around at nearby rival, DuVal High School. "Coach Powell has a knack for developing young men. He is a great motivator and gets them really pumped up and excited to play the game of football," said Athletic Director Carlyle Rose.

Currently, the Flowers High School football team is an outstanding 5 – 0. Two of their commanding wins were against signature rivals, Glenn Park High School and Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

Coach Powell believes in supporting his student athletes both on and off the field. According to Rose, "He [Coach Powell] does a good job of following up and staying in touch with the kids as they move on to the next steps in life. He is able to motivate them to excel not only on the football field, but also in the classroom and beyond."

Player safety is paramount to Coach Powell. Since assuming the head coaching position two seasons ago, he has been adamant in ordering the newest, best and safest equipment, especially shoulder pads and helmets. The Flowers High School coaching staff is well versed in the USA Football 'Heads Up' program and promotes it regularly on the field.

Rose concluded by saying, "Coach Powell relates to today's student athlete exceptionally well. He has some very high reaching long term goals for the program and is giving his student athletes opportunities to learn and benefit from the game, which is a very important quality in today's society. Overall, he is a great role model to help the kids move to where they need to be next and loves to see his players succeed in life."
