When Dale Earnhardt Jr. isn't racing he's keeping tabs on the Redskins.
He even tries to stay up to date with the Redskins while driving in certain races, which he admitted on ESPN 980's "Cooley & Kevin" Friday morning.
"It just depends on what race we're at," Earhardt Jr. said. "If we're racing at Talladega and Daytona; those aren't physical race tracks and the caution laps at those particular tracks are very long so I might ask for an update. My spotter is a huge Buffalo Bills fan so if I need an update I can get it from him."
The two-time Daytona 500 winner also sees Washington as a team that's on the rise.
"They've got a lot of great players and the new general manager [Scot McCloughan] they have, I think he does a really good job of scouting and bringing in quality guys," Earnhardt said. "Not guys with just talent, but guys who are captains and leaders on their teams. They are going to be locker room guys."
Earnhardt said he really liked McCloughan's draft this year and believes many rookies will be around for the team's future. Does that involve Trent Williams? If he continues to show he can play at a high level, Earnhardt sure hopes so.
"I do want to see him be a field general and control the ball," the North Carolina native said. "Don't turn it over, put points on the board, and allow the defense to control the rest of the game. If he can do that on a consistent basis then you want to sign him, whatever that takes, whatever that number is you need to go ahead and put that in the books because there is just not that many quality quarterbacks roaming around the league."
As he did a couple years ago, expect to see Earnhardt Jr. at FedExField before the regular season begins.
"I love going to the third or fourth preseason game where you got guys who are literally on the bubble trying to get in," he said. "When you're watching those guys compete out on the field trying to make a play every down, man, those are some of the most fun games to go to."
