Taylor: 4th In Defensive Rookie Voting

Redskins safety Sean Taylor was fourth in the Associated Press's Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, behind winner Jonathan Vilma of the New York Jets, Houston Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson and Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams.

Taylor, the Redskins' first-round pick (fifth overall) last April, recorded 89 tackles (62 solo) in his rookie campaign, fifth-best on the team.

Taylor also logged four interceptions, one sack, 10 passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

The Miami (Fla.) product also became known as a heavy hitter toward the end of the season. Having a feared presence in the secondary is something that assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams has encouraged.

"Here's the deal: We want wide receivers to understand what it is to catch the ball inside the numbers," Williams said. "Receivers have to understand that this is a territorial game and if you want part of that territory, you have to be ready to pay the price sometimes. Our secondary is starting to do those types of things."

Adding to his impressive rookie season, Taylor was also named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl.

Vilma earned 21 votes from a national panel of 48 writers and broadcasters who cover pro football. He finished the season second on the Jets with 116 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
