Before being named the No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft for the San Francisco 49ers, Alex Smith pieced together a strong college career highlighted by a junior year in which he led Utah to an undefeated season.

Before earning three Pro Bowl nods and appearing in seven career playoff games, Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith was selected with the No. 1-overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

After a season in which the San Francisco 49ers finished with a 2-14 regular season record, the team selected Smith with the top pick in the draft after he excelled in Urban Meyer's offense at Utah.

In his three seasons with the Utes, Smith completed 389-of-587 attempts for 5,203 yards with 47 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. Additionally, Smith rushed for more than 1,000 yards with 15 touchdowns.

After appearing in just two games as a freshman, Smith became Utah's full-time starter during his sophomore season in 2003. In 11 games, Smith threw for 2,247 yards with 15 touchdowns to three interceptions. In Utah's first seven games of the season, Smith threw 12 touchdown passes without an interception.

Smith's best season at Utah came during his junior campaign, though, as he threw for nearly 3,000 yards with 32 touchdown passes against only four picks. The 6-foot-4, 217 pounder led Utah to an undefeated regular season as he had seven different outings in which he threw for multiple touchdowns without a pick.

After finishing fourth in Heisman voting, Smith capped off his college career by leading Utah to a 35-7 victory over Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl. In that game, Smith completed 29-of-37 attempts for 328 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Three months later, Smith heard his name called before anyone else in the draft.
