On The Mend: Injured Redskins To Watch

With today's final OTA practice open to the media, there are a number of Redskins injuries to keep an eye on.

Head coach Mike Shanahan has a history of being caustious with his players and not allowing football to get in the way of a full recovery from injury.

"Anytime anyone comes off a surgery, if it's Pierre [Garcon], Orakpo or Robert [Griffin III], you want to make sure they are healthy before you put them back out there," he said after last week's practice. "the key is to make sure that they are getting mental reps to study what we are doing on both sides of the ball and that they are ready for camp.

"You don't want to put them in there too quickly because you don't want to set them back. You just want to make sure we go to Richmond and have a chance to have all these guys ready to compete for these positions."

Players will take the field for practice at 10:40 a.m. and injured players will split off to the back fields to practice on their own.

Here is a rundown of the Redskins' injuries, based on last week's practice:

  • Quarterback Robert Griffin III, knee. Griffin III was relegated to the sideline again last week, but was cleared to be able to run with teammates. He suggested he was still weeks away from " explosive running" and cutting, but progress is being made in his recovery. He is not expected to practice fully until at least training camp.
  • Wide receiver Pierre Garcon, shoulder. Garcon says he is fully recovered from his injury and head coach Mike Shanahan said he is shattering expectations for where he should be at this point after surgery. Per NFL AM this morning, Garcon said: "I've been taking the time off to fully recover. The shoulder is doing well. I've been lifting, working out, running, sprinting. I do everything I needed to do. If there was a game tomorrow I'd be able to play."
  • Tight end Fred Davis, Achilles' tendon. Davis has yet to take the practice field since rupturing his Achilles' tendon in Week 7 last season. Despite recovering from a very unpredictable injury, Davis told the NFL Network last week that he intends to return in time to practice during next week's minicamp.
  • Safety Brandon Meriweather, knee. Still relegated to the back field during OTA practice, Meriweather has been upbeat about his injury, saying he hopes to return in time for training camp. When pressed further, he says he really doesn't know if that is a realistic goal or not. Meriweather is likely to fill the starting strong safety position when he returns, but both he and the coaching staff are determined to wait until he is fully healthy first.
  • Linebacker Brian Orakpo, pectoral. Shanahan says he is healthy and practicing fully, but the Redskins brass is still being cautious: "You look at what he went through with his rehab, before we could say he was ready to practice, the trainers and doctors had to feel like he was 100 percent. In the back of your mind, are you always cautious or are you worried sometimes? I think you are always worried, but you are always hoping that it healed back the right way with Orakpo, at least so far, he looks very good because his strength is there."
  • Linebacker London Fletcher, ankle. It's hard to count Fletcher out of anything, and very unusual to see the 16-year veteran anywhere but the middle of the action. Considering his veteran status, Fletcher would be forgiven if he skipped OTAs, but has used the time to work with the training staff to prepare his body for the long grind of another season.
  • Tight end Jordan Reed, leg. Reed joined Griffin III running on the sideline last week as he continues his recovery from a knee/thigh/quad injury that hampered him last season at Florida. Reed has yet to be a healthy participant for the Redskins this offseason but is getting valuable reps with Griffin III on the sideline as he learns the offense.
  • Defensive end Adam Carriker, knee. Shanahan on if there is a timetable for his return: "No, there isn't. He is not going to be able to go for sure until camp, I do know that."
  • Linebacker Keenan Robinson, pectoral. Robinson is dealing with a similar injury to Orakpo, but was suffered in Week 12 as opposed to Week 2. Per Shanahan: "Keenan Robinson is not too far behind but we don't want to take a chance with him. He's not going to come back until we go to camp."
  • Running back Roy Helu Jr., leg. Helu, Jr. knows that the writing is on the wall after an unhealthy season led to the Redskins drafting a pair of running backs that could fill his role. Helu says he got a procedure on his ailing leg after rehab failed to fix the problem. Now with less than 50 days until training camp, Helu Jr. says he plans to be ready.
  • Running back Chris Thompson, knee. Yet another player returning from ACL injury, Thompson is progressing steadily, and ran "sprints" last week with Reed and Griffin III. Thompson has the advantage of learning the offense from afar, but will need to return for training camp if he expects to compete for a crowded running back roster position.
  • Offensive lineman Maurice Hurt, arthorscopic knee surgery. Per head coach Mike Shanahan: "Hurt is having a scope done on his knee today. They should be all-right for [training] camp. The doctor made a decision to clean that knee out a little bit. It has been inflamed. Hopefully there will be no setback and he will be ready to go for camp."
  • Safety Jordan Pugh, ear infection. Pugh missed his flight back to Washington from Dallas while dealing with an ear infection that kept him grounded. He is likely to be recovered from that and present at practice.

More to come on Redskins.com after today's practice.
