LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation announced today that Woodbridge High School (Prince William County Schools) head football coach, Gary Wortham, has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week presented by Inova Sports Medicine for the week of Oct. 30.

Wortham arrived at Woodbridge High School three seasons ago. However, this season is his best start yet. Currently, the Woodbridge Vikings are 8-1, coming off a big win against Hylton High School last Friday night, 23-20.  This was Woodbridge's first win over Hylton since 2009 and Wortham's first-ever win over Hylton in his eight years as a head coach.

"Wortham's drive is beyond football," said George Washington, Woodbridge High School Activities Director. "He strives to inspire his athletes to use their talent as a tool to help them succeed after their athletic career ends."

Off the field, Wortham stresses the importance of academics and community outreach among his athletes. "In order to ensure that his students have opportunities for academic success during the season, Coach Wortham holds a study hall before practices and helps to provide tutors for students needing assistance," Washington added.

In terms of safety, Wortham focuses on teaching proper tackling fundamentals to all student-athletes. In addition, the entire coaching staff is very well versed in the latest safety training techniques.

Washington ended by saying, "Coach Wortham genuinely cares about all students. He runs his program with integrity and such precision that his players not only have respect for him, but take pride in being a part of the team no matter if they win or lose."
