Zorn's First Week Was Busy...But 'Energizing'

Jim Zorn's mind is racing--even when he's in bed at night.

He might even be losing some sleep at night thinking of his suddenly intense workload.

Meeting with players and coaches. Getting ready for the NFL Scouting Combine Feb. 20-26 in Indianapolis. Interviews with media.

Zorn's first week as Redskins head coach has been hectic, to say the least.

"Once you get to work, and once the day starts, that's where it really sinks in about how much you have to do," Zorn said on Redskins Radio on Feb. 14. "But then you rise up and get those things done."

Certainly, time management is a key for Zorn as he establishes himself at Redskins Park.

"I have a good calendar and I've been going from one thing to another," Zorn said. "It's all been fitting together, and I think that's been a real plus for me. It's all working.

"And there has been a lot of great support and encouragement. So that part has been a pleasant surprise and it has made my life easier."

It hasn't been overwhelming. Instead, he characterized his workload as "energizing."

Zorn continues to meet with players or chat with them on the phone, a process that he enjoys.

Antwaan Randle El has come in to Redskins Park to talk with Zorn.

"He said, 'I need that playbook, I need that playbook,'" Zorn said, smiling. "You don't need to motivate a guy like Antwaan."

Added Zorn: "I really have a good sense for how players] feel the situation here is going to be."

And Zorn reiterated that he feels he must earn the respect of his assistant coaches and players.

One notable difference between Zorn and his Hall of Fame predecessor Joe Gibbs is their sleeping habits.

Gibbs famously had a cot in his Redskins Park office where he slept most nights as coaches prepared the game plan during the week.

Zorn said he would not sleep at Redskins Park.

"It sounds like I might be criticizing them, saying that they shouldn't have done that," Gibbs said. "That's not the case--that's just the way they did it. I don't know if my body is capable of that. I can do it, if I had to, but not often."

Zorn added: "For me, what I hope is that we have an efficient plan, we talk about that plan and then our coaches all work together to implement that plan. I want guys fresh. If I'm efficient, and I have to stay up that late, then I'm probably doing too much."
