John Beck did not play in Friday's preseason opener vs. Pittsburgh, a setback for the quarterback as he tries to compete for the Redskins' starting job.

Beck suffered a groin injury on Aug. 6 and was slowed in practice in the days leading up to the Steelers game.

Beck was on the field at pre-game in full uniform and he was throwing passes during warm-ups.

In the end, head coach Mike Shanahan did not believe Beck was 100 percent healthy yet. That was the standard that Shanahan said he needed to let Beck play on his injured groin.

Rex Grossman, Beck's top competition at quarterback, opened the game as the starter and performed well, completing 19-of-26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Kellen Clemens opened the second half at quarterback for the Redskins.

The Redskins' quarterback competition remains among the top storylines of training camp and preseason.

For now, Grossman has the edge.
