Betts Doubtful; Springs Still Questionable

Running back Ladell Betts has been downgraded to doubtful for this Sunday's game against Kansas City. Betts, who sat out practice all this week, has a groin injury.

If Betts is unable to play, Rock Cartwright could see increased playing time as the primary backup to Clinton Portis. Rookie running back Nehemiah Broughton also could be activated for the first time this season.

Betts suffered the injury in practice on Oct. 6. He was limited in last Sunday's game at Denver, recording just two carries for five yards. Portis had the bulk of carries, rushing for 103 yards on 20 carries.

Portis, listed as probable with a calf injury, participated in practice on Friday.

Betts is also listed as the Redskins' primary kick returner. James Thrash would assume those duties should Betts not play.

Meantime, cornerback Shawn Springs sat out practice again on Friday and remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Springs has been limited due to a shin injury.

"It doesn't look good for Shawn," head coach Joe Gibbs said on Friday when asked about Springs' status.

Assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams indicated that Springs still could play on Sunday despite missing practice all week.

"I don't worry as much about a guy not practicing who has played in that division before [with Seattle] and against some of those players," Williams said.

If Springs is unable to go, Rogers and Walt Harris would likely see the bulk of playing time at cornerback, with Ade Jimoh serving as the third cornerback. Harris is returning from a calf injury that sidelined him for several games.

"Walt has practiced well this week," Williams said. "Our athletic trainers have done a tremendous job of getting him back and making sure that he is up to speed."

Kicker John Hall (quad injury) has also been downgraded to doubtful for the game. Nick Novak will likely kick for the fourth consecutive week.
