The Washington Redskins have announced that head football coach Wes Driskill of Heritage High School in Leesburg, Va., has been named Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of September 15, 2008.
The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.
Coach Driskill has been coaching football at Heritage since 2002. In that time he has led the football team to two Co-Dulles District Championships.
"Wes Driskill teaches his athletes that success can be achieved when you commit yourself to your family, school and team. His legacy will be in the dedication and commitment he instills in his players as they become leaders in the community. Winning is fun but winning in life is the ultimate goal for Coach Driskill," said Athletic Director Ron Petrella.
Coach Driskill's commitment to football extends off the field where he assists with the Western Loudoun Relay for Life and Special Olympic events hosted at Heritage High School.
"He does so many things behind the scenes, assisting needy families and counseling athletes with academic concerns. He is the first to take a student shopping for clothes so they can look nice for away games. He does these things for all student athletes, regardless of athletic ability," Petrella said.
Heritage High School has started the 2008 season with a 3-0 record, a first in school history.
Each week during the 2008 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.
Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from NFL Charities to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins head coach Jim Zorn and NFL Director of Football Operations Gene Washington.
