Matt Jones Voted FedEx Ground Player Of The Week

Fresh off a 123-yard, two-touchdown performance last Sunday against the St. Louis Rams, rookie running back Matt Jones on Thursday was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week.

It's official -- Washington Redskins rookie running back Matt Jones has been voted the winner of the FedEx Ground Player of the Week honors.

Jones, who ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns in last Sunday's 24-10 victory over the St. Louis Rams at FedExField, was competing with former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings and Giovanni Bernard of the Cincinnati Bengals.

But it was the rookie, not the veterans, who caught a lot of attention last week between bruising runs up the middle and even a little bit of speed on his 39-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Jones becomes the first Redskins player to earn this honor since the Alfred Morris' selection following a 200-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 of his rookie season in 2012.

Jones said after last Sunday's game that he was feeding off Morris, his veteran teammate, throughout the day, which was evident by his long touchdown run just two plays after Morris charged right up the middle of the field for a 35-yard gain.

"I mean every good run he had, I was just feeding off of that with his energy," Jones told reporters. "I learn from him each and every day, each and every game. We had great energy today to run the ball."

And while he got a lot of credit for his great performance, the rookie was quick to deflect attention to his offensive linemen.

"I just saw Shawn Lauvao blocking his butt off all day," Jones said. "I saw him knock one of their ends out. I got underneath and I saw daylight and I took it to the next level."
