More DB Depth: Battle, Edwards Signed

The signings continue, fast and furious. On Wedneday, the Redskins signed cornerback Julian Battle and safety Antuan Edwards, adding to the depth in the team's defensive backfield.

Battle is a third-year NFL veteran while Edwards has seven years of NFL experience. Edwards played along-side current Redskin Adam Archuleta in St. Louis in 2004.

To make room for Battle and Edwards, the Redskins released offensive lineman Jonta Woodard and defensive back Chris Hawkins.

Battle, 6-2 and 205 pounds, is a three-year NFL veteran after being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round (92nd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Battle has appeared in 26 games with one start and amassed 14 tackles (13 solo) and three pass deflections. In 2005, he ruptured his Achilles tendon and spent the year on injured reserve.

Edwards, 6-1 and 210 pounds, is a seven-year NFL veteran who has appeared in 72 games with 32 starts during his career and has amassed 225 tackles (172 solo), seven interceptions and three sacks.

Edwards spent 2005 with the Atlanta Falcons, totaling 14 tackles (nine solo) while appearing in four games with one start. He has also spent time on the rosters of St. Louis, Miami, and Green Bay during his time in the NFL.

The signings are expected to help bolster the Redskins' secondary this preseason. The unit has had a series of injuries in recent weeks, plus several players struggled in the 19-3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason opener.

Cornerback Shawn Springs is expected to miss 3-6 weeks after undergoing a medical procedure to repair a minor tear in his abdominal muscle.

Also, cornerback Ade Jimoh remains uncertain for this week's game against the New York Jets due to a bruised sternum.

On Tuesday, the Redskins signed linebacker Jeff Posey, offensive lineman Spencer Folau and running back A.J. Harris. On Monday, the team acquired defensive back Mike Rumph from San Francisco in exchange for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs.
