News & Notes: Ecker Has Groin Surgery

First-year tight end Tyler Ecker had surgery on his groin on Wednesday. The procedure could sideline him for eight weeks.

Ecker suffered a groin injury on the opening day of training camp last year. He was later placed on injured reserve.

The injury lingered into the 2008 offseason. Ecker was not able to participate in mini-camp or OTA action.

With the surgery, Ecker may not be ready for the start of training camp, head coach Jim Zorn said.

"It's going to be eight weeks, I believe, before we can really get him back out going full speed," Zorn said. "It may be a couple of weeks into training camp before he's ready."

Ecker's injury had been improving in recent weeks, Zorn said, but a groin specialist recommended the surgery to minimize the chances of the injury re-occurring.

"Hopefully the procedure will help him get a little relief," Zorn said.

Ecker was the Redskins' seventh-round draft pick in 2007. He played college football at Michigan.

#### -- WEATHER COOLS OFF

The Redskins completed their 10th OTA practice on Wednesday amid cooler temperatures.

After two days of intense heat and humidity, temperatures were in the mid-80s on Wednesday.

"Highlights from the practice [included] our defense did a wonderful job shutting us down on offense in the red zone," Jim Zorn said. "We got in a few times, but they really did a nice job."

Zorn expects strong attendance at the Redskins' final OTA practice on Thursday.

"We have one more opportunity--that is the way I look at it--to get a little bit better and to leave on a good note," Zorn said. "Things will happen fast. Then we will trust that everybody gets themselves into great condition for training camp."

#### -- MOSS MISSES PRACTICE

Santana Moss was sidelined on Wednesday due to an illness, team officials said.

"It could be [the result of] a little bit of heat exhaustion," Jim Zorn said.

Moss was expected to check in with the athletic trainers on Wednesday afternoon in order to re-evaluate his condition.

Clinton Portis and Cornelius Griffin were once again excused from practice for personal reasons. Shawn Springs remained absent.
