News & Notes: Portis a 'Close Call' For Titans Game

Clinton Portis said he hopes to play this Sunday vs. Tennessee but he expects his availability to be another "close call."

Portis has been sidelined since Week 4 with a groin injury.

He has returned to practice in recent weeks and he was limited in Thursday's session at Redskins Park.

"I have been wanting to get out there," Portis said. "I wanted to be out there Monday night. But we're just being smart about. If I re-injure it Monday night and then I miss the rest of the season, it's just not worth it.

"So when I get back out there, I want to make sure I can help this team and stay in the whole game."

Late last week, Portis said he suffered a setback with the injury.

"I came back from the bye and I was eager to push it," he said. "I was like, 'Yeah, I'm ready.' Then it flared up, and it took a couple days to calm down. This week, so far so good."

Ryan Torain sat out last Monday's game against Philadelphia after he re-aggravated a sore hamstring during pre-game warm-ups.

Torain, who leads the Redskins with 391 rushing yards, called his status is "day to day" but declined to elaborate on the injury.

He did not practice on Thursday.

"I just have to keep rehabbing, keep preparing and stay positive," he said.

If Portis and Torain are sidelined for the Titans game, then Keiland Williams would make his second NFL start.

Williams started the Eagles game and had 16 carries for 89 yards and two touchdowns and four catches for 50 yards and one touchdown.

-- NO PRACTICE FOR ROGERS, LANDRY

The Redskins could be shorthanded in the secondary this week, as cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety LaRon Landry sat out Thursday's practice with injuries.

Rogers has a hamstring injury suffered in the Eagles game, while Landry has played through a lingering Achilles injury.

"We'll work them out [on Friday]," head coach Mike Shanahan said. "They'll have to feel a lot better to play."

Landry has missed practice time the last three weeks due to the sore Achilles.

Is the injury worse this week?

"I don't think so," Shanahan said. "He has just been sore and fighting through the pain. If he can fight through the pain, then he'll be able to play."

-- SHANAHAN vs. FISHER

Mike Shanahan and Titans head coach Jeff Fisher were part of the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff from 1992-94.

They both moved on to their first head coaching jobs a year later – Shanahan with Denver and Fisher with Tennessee.

They both are among the most accomplished coaches of the generation.

Shanahan has a record of 158-106 as a head coach, while Fisher has a 146-120 record.

With Shanahan departing Denver after the 2008 season and moving on to Washington in 2010, Fisher is the longest-tenured NFL head coach.

"Anytime you have a job for 17 years, you've done a lot of good things," Shanahan said of Fisher. "Jeff is a guy who has a good feel for things – offense, defense, special teams. He is a hands-on guy and he relates well with people.

"He has done a great job with all of the moves they've had and the transition to a new group of players. Not many guys can do that and hold it all together."
