News & Notes: Vincent Injury Is 'Day to Day'

Strong safety Troy Vincent is listed as day to day after he re-aggravated a hamstring injury in Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"We'll see how it is with him this week," head coach Joe Gibbs said.

Vincent suffered the injury in the first half of the 20-17 loss to the Bucs. He was replaced by Vernon Fox, a fifth-year player who has played mostly on special teams since signing with the Redskins on Aug. 29.

Vincent initially injured his hamstring in Week 1 when he was a member of the Buffalo Bills. He was placed on the Bills' injured reserve list, but was released by the team in mid-October. He signed with the Redskins on Oct. 16.

Since joining the Redskins, Vincent has taken over a starting role from Adam Archuleta. He has 18 tackles and a blocked field goal that was instrumental in the Redskins' 22-19 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 5.

Meantime, wide receivers Santana Moss and David Patten are both expected to test their injured hamstrings to determine if they can practice this week. The Redskins host the Carolina Panthers this Sunday, Nov. 26, at FedExField.

Moss and Patten both sat out Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.

Asked if it might be prudent to place Moss on injured reserve rather than risk him re-aggravating his hamstring, head coach Joe Gibbs replied: "We're hoping he can play this week. He's real important to us. We want him healthy and we want him back."

-- SAFETY MATTERS

With Troy Vincent sidelined with the hamstring injury on Sunday, defensive coaches turned to Vernon Fox at strong safety instead of Adam Archuleta. It was a decision that raised eyebrows.

On Monday, Joe Gibbs said that Archuleta and Fox are both part of defensive packages, and they play an integral role on special teams.

"[Archuleta] is playing a lot for us," Gibbs said. "He is the personal protector on punts. He plays a lot of teams and is doing a real good job for us over there. He plays in some of the packages that we have for him at safety.

"We have other packages for other guys, too. Vernon has played real well. He also plays a lot on teams. We had an injury to Troy, so he got a chance to play."
