Player Evaluation to Start Soon

With the hoopla of Thursday's press conference over, a degree of normalcy returned to Redskins Park on Friday. Head coach Joe Gibbs got down to the business of, well, being a head coach.

Gibbs spent much of Friday huddled with team officials, continuing to finalize the coaching staff. A complete or partial list of assistants could be announced this weekend or early next week. He has already announced Joe Bugel will serve as assistant head coach and former Buffalo head coach Gregg Williams will lead the defense.

As far as evaluating the players, Gibbs said that could begin next week when the full coaching staff is expected to be in place.

"We're going to take three days and go as hard as we can," he said. "I think you can get some different opinions if you watch all those games in a row and if you watch all those players. I think you can get a pretty good feeling."

Gibbs said that he has been impressed with what he has seen of Patrick Ramsey in the game film he's watched of the second-year quarterback.

"What everybody has told me about him has been very consistent: very complimentary," Gibbs said. "He's extremely tough and smart. I've watched four game films and I'd say he has a very strong arm. Everybody's been very consistent about him."

Ramsey completed his second NFL season by completing 179-of-337 passes for 2,166 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He was sacked 30 times, however, and was placed on injured reserve in December with a bone bruise in his right foot.

Gibbs indicated he would prefer to keep three quarterbacks on the roster during the regular season. Last year, under Steve Spurrier, the Redskins kept two quarterbacks, with a third on the practice squad.

"I think sometimes the most important decision you make is: who's backing up," Gibbs said. "I always thought all three of those [quarterback] spots were critical."
