Redskins Extend Contracts, Re-sign Fox

The Redskins announced March 2 that they have completed multi-year contract extensions for guard Randy Thomas and fullback Mike Sellers.

In addition, the team announced March 2 that it had re-signed safety Vernon Fox to a multi-year contract.

"It has always been our goal to make every effort possible to keep those players we feel are important to our team," said Head Coach Joe Gibbs. "Randy and Mike have proven to be key components on our offense and leaders for our team and Vernon had a great impact for us last season despite joining the team after preseason."

Thomas, 6-5 and 306 pounds, is an eight-year NFL veteran and has spent the last four seasons at right guard for the Redskins. Last season, he started all 16 games and helped lead an offensive line that paved the way for the NFL's fourth-ranked rushing attack.

In addition, the Redskins only allowed 19 sacks on the season, which ranked as the third fewest in the NFL in 2006. Thomas spent his first four NFL seasons with the New York Jets before joining the Redskins as a free agent in March 2003.

Sellers, 6-3 and 278 pounds, is a seven-year NFL veteran and has spent six of those seasons with the Redskins. Originally signed by the team as undrafted rookie free agent in 1998, Sellers spent three seasons with Washington before joining the Cleveland Browns for the 2001 season.

After spending the 2002 and 2003 seasons in the CFL, Sellers returned to the Redskins in 2004 and has had a major impact on the team's offensive attack.

The versatile fullback is a proven lead blocker for the rushing attack, but has also shown the ability to be effective with the ball in his hands, catching passes out of the backfield, and finding the end zone (he had a career-high seven touchdowns in 2005). He is also a key player on special teams.

Fox, 5-10 and 200 pounds, joined the Redskins on Aug. 29, 2006 before the start of the regular season and made an immediate impact, playing in all 16 games and starting the final six at safety.

Fox recorded a total of 42 tackles, including 31 solo stops and added an interception from his safety position. He was also a key contributor on special teams, finishing third overall on the squad with 26 tackles and one punt block.

Fox is a five-year NFL veteran out of Fresno State, having spent two seasons each in San Diego and Detroit before joining the Redskins.
