Cannon Matthews joins the Redskins' coaching staff with previous NFL experience with the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, whom he coached with during the 2016 season.

The Washington Redskins on Monday announced the hiring of Cannon Matthews as the team's new defensive quality control coach.

Matthews began his coaching career with the Buffalo Bills as a defensive and special teams coaching assistant for two seasons (2008-09) before moving over to the other side of the football in 2010 as an offensive coaching assistant with the Bills for two seasons.

In his two years working with the defensive unit, Buffalo ranked in the top five against the pass, as they allowed just 49 touchdown passes during that span and intercepted 38 passes.

During the 2008 season, Leodis McKelvin finished second in the NFL in kickoff return yards (1,468) and third in kickoff return average (28.2).

Matthews moved to the college ranks for one season to be the running backs coach for Kentucky Christian University in 2012 before re-joining the professional ranks as a defensive coaching intern with the Cleveland Browns in 2013.

Matthews was named defensive quality coach for the Tennessee Titans in 2014, holding the position for two years. In 2015, defensive end Jurrell Casey was named to his first Pro Bowl as he recorded 54 tackles with seven sacks.

Matthews worked with the Cleveland Browns as an assistant defensive backs coach for the 2016 season, helping guide a unit that recorded all 10 of the team's interceptions during the year.
