Redskins Sign Barnes to Roster, Release Baxter

The Redskin signed practice squad linebacker Brandon Barnes to the 53-man roster, the team announced on Friday.

To make room on the roster for Barnes, the Redskins released tight end Fred Baxter.

Baxter, a 10-year vet, had previously signed with the Redskins on Oct. 19 after the team had released Walter Rasby.

He suffered a hamstring injury during a recent practice and the team decided to reach an injury settlement with him, head coach Joe Gibbs said.

Baxter's release means the offense will have Robert Royal as the lone tight end on the roster for the Green Bay game.

However, H-backs Brian Kozlowski, Mike Sellers and Chris Cooley have experience at the tight end position.

"We'll have four guys who will be active and ready to go at tight end [on Sunday]," Gibbs said.

In addition, the Redskins signed linebacker Billy Strother to the Redskins' practice squad on Friday. Strother takes the spot of Barnes.
