Redskins Sign LB Alfred Fincher

The Washington Redskins announced July 31 that they have signed linebacker Alfred Fincher and waived/injured running back Eric Shelton. Fincher will wear jersey No. 46R.

Fincher, who was released by Detroit last Saturday, is entering his fourth NFL season out of the University of Connecticut. He had signed with the Lions as an unrestricted free agent on March 26, 2008.

The Norwood, Mass., native has played in 24 career NFL games, including the first seven last season before he was placed on injured reserve with a concussion.

The 6-foot-1, 238-pound Fincher was originally a third-round selection on the Saints in the 2005 draft and contributed 14 special teams tackles in 11 games as a rookie. He posted four special teams stops in six games in 2006.

The former All-Big East linebacker was born on August 15, 1983.

Shelton originally signed with the Redskins on January 7, 2008.
