The Washington Redskins today announced the signing of five college free agents who participated in the team's 2015 rookie minicamp.
The Washington Redskins today announced the signing of five college free agents, each of whom participated in the team's rookie minicamp on Friday and Saturday. They also signed free agent linebacker Alonzo Highsmith.
In corresponding moves, the team also waived tackle Brey Cook, defensive lineman LaKendrick Ross, linebacker James Gayle (injured) wide receiver Tyler Rutenbeck, and quarterback Connor Halliday (left squad).

Tovar Allen – T – 6-6, 315 pounds – Alabama State
Played collegiately at Alabama State from 2011-14, appearing in 36 games with 24 starts … Played in eight games his senior year … started in all 11 games in which he appeared his junior year, missing one game due to injury. Was named to the College Sports Madness All-SWAC Second Team after helping the Hornets lead the conference in rushing while scoring more than 30 points for a third straight season … started all 11 games at right tackle his sophomore year, leading Alabama State to 100-yard rushing performances in nine of its 11 games and scoring on 38-of-41 red zone possessions with 32 touchdowns … Played in six games with two starts as a true freshman in 2011. Made his first-career start against Eastern Michigan, and started the next week against Grambling State.
Houston Bates – LB – 6-3, 250 pounds – Louisiana Tech
Played at Illinois from 2010 to 2013 before transferring to Louisiana Tech for the 2014 season … Started all 14 games as a defensive end at Louisiana Tech in 2014, finishing with 42 tackles – 16 for loss – with 10 sacks, 13 hurries, two pass deflections and one forced fumble, fumble recovery and interception apiece. Was named Most Valuable Player in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl after collecting 4.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss against his former Illinois team. Participated in the College Gridiron Showcase All-Star Game at the University of Texas … Was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection at Illinois in 2013 after starting all 12 games and collecting 40 tackles – 12 for loss – with 3.5 sacks, five hurries, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a safety. Hutson Mason – QB – 6-3, 209 pounds – Georgia
Played at Georgia from 2010 to 2014, setting the school record for completion percentage (64.98 percent) with a minimum of 400 passing attempts … Set the school record for single-season completion percentage (67.87 percent) as a senior in 2014 as he played and started in all 13 games, completing 188-of-277 passes for 2,168 yards with 21 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Also had four rushing touchdowns on the year. Was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. … Appeared in five games with two starts in 2013, completing 67-of-110 passes (60.9 percent) for 968 yards with three touchdowns to five interceptions. Also ran for a touchdown. Dasman McCullum – LB – 6-4, 242 pounds – Southern Mississippi
Played at Southern Mississippi from 2010 to 2014 … Was a Phil Steele third-team All-Conference USA selection his senior year in 2014 after collecting 61 tackles (13 for a loss) with a team-high 4.5 sacks and four forced fumbles with one fumble recovery, interception and blocked extra point apiece. Earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors after registering a career-high 10 tackles against Appalachian State. …Played in all 12 games his junior year, recording 37 tackles with a team-best 10.5 tackles. Daryl Waud – DE – 6-5, 270 pounds – Western Ontario
Played at Western Ontario from 2011 to 2014, and becomes the second Mustang prospect signed to an NFL contract since 2009 (Vaughn Martin; San Diego Chargers). Was also selected by the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in the second round (12th overall) of the 2015 CFL draft. Was a three-time OUA all-star and two-time CIS all-Canadian selection … Was a OUA first team all-star and first team all-Canadian selection in 2014 after recording 14.5 tackles and three sacks in eight regular-season games. Alonzo Highsmith – LB – 6-0, 240 pounds – Arkansas
Had stints in 2013 and 2014 with the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs, but did not play in any regular-season games. Played at Arkansas from 2011-12 after starting his collegiate career at Phoenix (Ariz.) College... Appeared in six games for the Razorbacks in 2012 before suffering a season-ending foot injury. Made 54 tackles (25 solo) and posted two sacks and fumble recovery... Started all 13 games of his first season at Arkansas in 2011, recording 80 tackles (12.5 for loss) with 4.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery (returned 47 yards for a touchdown), one interception and one pass breakup... Was a junior college All-American at Phoenix College. Recorded 94 tackles (79 solo including 12 for loss) with four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries for Phoenix in 2010...
