Springs Availability: Game Time Decision

Cornerback Shawn Springs' availability for Sunday's game against Tennessee will be a game time decision, head coach Joe Gibbs said on Friday. He remains listed as questionable on the team's injury report.

Perhaps of greater concern, though, is the availability of the Redskins' starting defensive tackles, Cornelius Griffin and Joe Salave'a.

Griffin, who has a hip injury, was downgraded to questionable after he missed practice this week. Salave'a remains questionable with a calf injury; he also missed practice this week.

With the Redskins set to face a mobile quarterback in Titans' Vince Young, head coach Joe Gibbs called the potential absence of Griffin and Salave'a a "real concern."

"With defensive linemen, you're always unsure how long they bounce back from injuries," Gibbs said. "Sometimes it's real quick, other times it takes longer. But with Cornelius and Joe, it hasn't bounced back yet. If they can't work, then you realize it may take more time for them to get well."

If Griffin and Salave'a are unable to play, rookies Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery and third-year player Ryan Boschetti would likely see playing time. Veteran defensive end Renaldo Wynn could also shift inside to play tackle.

Springs said after practice that he progressed through the week.

"It's up to Coach [Gregg] Williams and Coach Gibbs if I play," Springs added. "I'm getting better. I'm working my way back into it."

It's possible that Carlos Rogers and Kenny Wright would draw the starting assignments at cornerback, as they have the last five games, with Springs coming in for nickel or dime packages.

Gibbs was asked if Springs's on-field presence would provide a boost on Sunday.

"Obviously, anytime you have a real good football player--someone who is one of our leaders--when you get him back it's certainly a boost," Gibbs said. "Now, should he play, you're not talking about someone who is going to start a ballgame. But he could get some snaps."

Meantime, wide receiver David Patten was downgraded to questionable for Sunday's game. He missed practice this week due to a thigh injury.

Linebacker Marcus Washington (hip), defensive end Phillip Daniels (back), left guard Derrick Dockery (hip) and punter Derrick Frost (calf) practiced on Friday. They remain listed as probable.
