The Redskins have placed cornerback Shawn Springs on injured reserve and waived cornerback Mike Rumph, the team announced on Wednesday.
Taking the place of Springs and Rumph on the 53-man roster are a pair of defensive backs, John Eubanks and Leigh Torrence. Eubanks will wear No. 34, while Torrence will wear No. 29.
Springs suffered a fractured scapula (or shoulder blade) in his right shoulder last Sunday in St. Louis. He had 44 total tackles this season, along with one interception and seven passes defensed.
Springs' future with the team could be serving in a different role next season. Head coach Joe Gibbs indicated that he could play some safety next season. It's a position that Springs has said that he would be open to playing.
"Shawn has meant a lot to us," Gibbs said. "He has struggled this year with the injuries. That is something that has really hurt us.
"Certainly, he is someone that has a future with us. We think he can play a number of spots for us back there besides cornerback. He is very important for us at corner, but he can play other spots, too."
Eubanks, 5-10 and 173 pounds, has spent the season on the Redskins practice squad after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi in May. He started all 12 games his senior season at Southern Mississippi, recording 31 tackles and four interceptions.
Torrence, 6-0 and 183 pounds, is in his second NFL season out of Stanford.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2005 by Green Bay, he was waived by the Packers and signed with Atlanta prior to the start of the regular season. He saw action in 10 games in 2005 with the Falcons, playing on special teams and in the secondary.
He was waived by the Falcons prior to the start of the 2006 season.
In addition, the Redskins have signed wide receiver Ryan Hoag and offensive lineman Calvin Armstrong to the practice squad.
Hoag was with the Redskins' practice squad for one week in late November. A track star in college and a native of Minneapolis, Hoag is a first-year player out of Gustavus Adolphus. In April 2003, he was the last player selected in the NFL Draft, by the Oakland Raiders, earning him the draft day title of "Mr. Irrelevant."
Hoag, 6-2 and 200 pounds, has also had brief stints with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.
Armstrong is a 6-7, 325-pound offensive tackle who was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was active for three games last season with the Eagles, but he did not play.
Armstrong played his college ball at Washington State, where he was a four-year starter at left tackle and a three-time All-PAC 10 selection.
