Camp Practice Blog: Training Camp, Aug. 8

Redskins.com's training camp reports come to you as action happens on the Redskins Park practice fields.

Another open practice on the way, starting at 4:30 p.m. ET. It's already been an eventful day here at Redskins Park. No official word yet on Jim Molinaro, but Redskins.com TV's Larry Michael reported this afternoon on "Redskins Lunch" that he could be sidelined 3-5 weeks with a knee injury. During a Tuesday morning practice, Jon Jansen and rookie defensive tackle Kedric Golston got into a scuffle. 3:10 p.m. ET

Injury update from this morning: Carlos Rogers returned to practice, while Brandon Lloyd and Ladell Betts sat out. We'll see if Lloyd and Betts are back at work for the afternoon session. 3:24 p.m. ET

Just received word that the Redskins have signed safety Ben Emanuel, a former fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers who played in 11 games and started eight for the San Francisco 49ers last season. To make room for Emanuel, the team released safety Dennard Wilson. 4:10 p.m. ET

Normal routine for the afternoon practice: Players arrived at the top of the hour for a walk-through practice on the far field. It's pretty hot, but not unbearable. Tuesday is the last two-a-day practice of Redskins training camp. Players are certainly glad to see those come to an end. 4:20 p.m. ET

Early in practice, newcomer Ben Emanuel is working one-on-one with safeties coach Steve Jackson. For now, they are tossing the ball and warming up. Emanuel appears to have good size: he's 6-2 and 213 pounds. That's an example of how remarkable Sean Taylor is: the former first-round pick comes in at 6-2 and 232 pounds. 4:50 p.m. ET

Special teams players are working on fighting off blocks. It's special teams coordinator Danny Smith who's doing the blocking. Safety Pierson Prioleau comes running full speed at Smith, then Prioleau lets up just before hitting Smith. 5 p.m. ET

Defensive linemen, under the watchful eye of Greg Blache, are ordered to run sideways cross-field, one foot ahead of the other, with their arms and upper body swinging wildly. It looks like a dance. 5:05 p.m. ET

Carlos Rogers is practicing full-go. The second-year cornerback had missed several practices and Saturday's scrimmage due to back spasms. He made his return in Tuesday morning's practice. 5:07 p.m. ET

Renaldo Wynn has a contingent of family and friends here at training camp today. Young children, watching impatiently as players work through drills, chant, "Renaldo!" and "No. 97!" Ever the professional, Wynn keeps his attention span focused on football. 5:09 p.m. ET

Mark Brunell is sitting out Tuesday afternoon's practice. He has a mild calf injury, nothing serious. Brandon Lloyd is sitting out practice again, as is Curry Burns, Jim Molinaro, Nic Clemons, Kevin Simon, Ataveus Cash and Calen Powell. 5:11 p.m. ET

Chris Cooley, back in black? The Redskins' third-year tight end is wearing black socks pulled all the way up, black shorts and a black shirt underneath his white Redskins jersey. 5:20 p.m. ET

Carlos Rogers, running back? During defensive line drills, coaches used Rogers, 6-0 and 195 pounds as a running back. He should keep his day job as cornerback. On pitches from "quarterback" Kirk Olivadotti, Rogers bobbled the ball several times. 5:22 p.m. ET

For the second day in a row, 11-on-11 work started early. Here we go:

  • On the first play, Santana Moss pulled in a pass on an out pattern, beating Shawn Springs. With Moss's speed and Springs standing a few yards off of him, that play would have been difficult to stop.
  • Kenny Wright nearly had an interception, leaping high to grab a wobbly pass from Todd Collins. He tipped the ball into the air, but it fell behind him. Wright stood in the center of the field, disappointed that he could not grab the ball.
  • On the next play, Kenny Wright came in on a blitz, but he was quickly picked up by Clinton Portis. That allowed Todd Collins to complete a pass to a wide open James Thrash.
  • It was 75-on-75. Defensive end Karon Riley (jersey No. 75) got the better of offensive tackle Chris Pino (jersey No. 75) on an outside rush and pressured quarterback Jason Campbell. Riley, a fourth-year player who has previously played for the Atlanta Falcons, drew raves from linebacker Marcus Washington for his play in last Saturday's scrimmage.
  • Chris Clemons dropped back into coverage to help cover Mike Espy running a downfield pass route. Clemons leaped high to tip away Jason Campbell's pass. Espy's dive for the ball was fruitless.
  • Jason Campbell earned praise from Al Saunders, even after he bobbled and dropped the snap from Mike Pucillo. Campbell quickly regained his composure, gathered the ball in his hand, and continued the play. He threw a deep pass to David Patten, covered well by Shawn Springs, but the pass was just overthrown.

Speaking of David Patten, he is seeing increased action in Tuesday's practice. Coaches had expected to ease him back into action, but he says he feels "full-go." During 11-on-11s, several passes were thrown his way. 5:50 p.m. ET

More 11-on-11 work:

  • Chris Cooley split coverage and found himself wide open, beating a pair of young defensive backs. He caught a deep pass from Todd Collins for an easy score.
  • Even though his pass fell incomplete, Jason Campbell impressed with a rifle throw to Mike Espy. Campbell tried to place the ball so that only Espy could catch it, but the ball was just out of reach.
  • Christian Fauria logged a one-handed catch, hauling Todd Collins' pass in the flat while falling backward.
  • Todd Collins connected on a pass to Antwaan Randle El, who turned inside to break free from a tackle. It was a nice pickup in terms of yards. But standing there was Sean Taylor, who almost certainly would have leveled Randle El, if Taylor had not let up on the play.
  • Best touchdown pass of the day: Santana Moss ran a post pattern downfield, beating second-year cornerback Dimitri Patterson for a touchdown. Moss earned the afternoon's biggest ovation from fans.
  • Lemar Marshall logged an interception of second-year quarterback Casey Bramlet. Marshall got his hand on the pass and tipped it in the air so that only he could come down with it. He broke right, into a tackler, but then flipped the ball via lateral to Shawn Springs.
  • Kerry Carter and Jesse Lumsden, the two Canadian import running backs, both scored touchdowns on what appeared to be identical plays. They took a handoff and veered past several tackles, breaking down the sideline into open field.
  • On the last play of the afternoon, Pierson Prioleau nearly logged an interception in the end zone. Casey Bramlet tried to rifle in a pass to Chris Cooley, but Prioleau was there to knock the ball away.

After practice, running backs coach Earnest Byner had his players work against the blocking dummies. Last up? A reluctant Clinton Portis. Finally motivated, Portis went through the drills with enthusiasm, drawing applause from the nearby fans. 6:10 p.m. ET

You have to love Joe Bugel. Asked about bringing in offensive lineman Lincoln Kennedy for a workout, Bugel replied: "He was just visiting. He came in at a svelte 375 pounds." Svelte? Bugel laughed. 6:30 p.m. ET

Antwaan Randle El signed autographs for almost 45 minutes after practice. 6:45 p.m. ET

Mark Brunell said he sat out practice just to get some rest. Brandon Lloyd has a hip flexor. The injury is not thought to be serious. 6:55 p.m. ET
