Coaches, Scouts Stay Busy With Roster Review

The Redskins are two weeks into the offseason and the team's coaches and scouts continue to evaluate the roster and plot a course ahead.

General manager Bruce Allen said team officials continue to break down game film and assess the talent on the roster.

"We're doing scheme analysis and we're doing reviews," Allen said. "[Defensive coordinator] Jim Haslett is going to analyze how we did on the 3rd-and-4 from the left hash mark...So this is the period of review right now."

The review is sure to include quarterback Donovan McNabb and defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth.

McNabb and Haynesworth enter the offseason under contract with the Redskins, but it's uncertain – perhaps even unlikely – whether they'll be back with the club.

Little has changed regarding their status since the end of the regular season.

Allen told reporters on Thursday that he has had conversations with Fletcher Smith, McNabb's agent, but he did not go into specifics.

Allen described the ongoing player evaluations as a collaborative effort that starts with director of pro personnel Morocco Brown and includes the entire coaching and scouting staff.

"Mike [Shanahan] likes involving all of the assistants and getting their opinions," Allen said. "Maybe they saw one game tape that the scout didn't see."

Later this month, coaches and scouts will turn their attention to college all-star games to get a look at top prospects available this year in the NFL Draft.

The East-West Shrine Game is Saturday, Jan. 22 and the Senior Bowl is Saturday, Jan. 29.

Allen also reiterated that owner Daniel M. Snyder is "not involved" in player personnel matters.

"He'll be informed on what's going and he cares, but he doesn't make the decisions who we sign," Allen said.
