The Redskins finalized the rookie contract with top draft pick LaRon Landry on Tuesday, the team has announced.
To make room for Landry on the roster, the Redskins released wide receiver Jason Willis.
The Redskins had a deal in place with Landry on Monday, but he did not sign the contract until Tuesday morning.
Head coach Joe Gibbs said that he expected Landry to participate in Tuesday afternoon's training camp practice.
Asked if he was relieved to have a deal in place with Landry, Gibbs replied: "We are. You have everyone signed and everybody is here--that's a big deal.
"I was hoping that we would get it done in the first day or so, but I think [negotiations] got prolonged and dragged out some."
Landry, the sixth overall pick in last April's NFL Draft, missed six training camp practices.
Assistant head coach-defene Gregg Williams said that Landry, once he arrives at training camp, will have to adjust to the physical nature of NFL practices.
"When you get into the fourth day or the fifth practice, you start getting through the soreness," Williams said. "The guys out here have gone through that and they were quicker and faster [in Monday morning's practice] because of repetitions and competition.
"LaRon is going to have to catch up in the repetitions and competition. He's going to be sore when everybody else is flying. So that's the toughest part to get through. That's the thing we'll have to watch.
"The mental things--we have enough time in camp to get him up to speed."
Williams typically takes his time inserting rookies into the lineup. Even Sean Taylor, the Redskins' fifth overall pick in 2004, did not start until three games into his rookie season.
Through Monday's practices, Pierson Prioleau is getting the bulk of reps at strong safety, where Landry is slotted to play once he gets in camp.
Linebacker Marcus Washington thinks Landry's transition to training camp will be smooth.
"He had a pretty good OTA [in May] and he's a guy who fits in well because he flies around here," Washington said. "Now that he has the business side out of the way, he can come out here and enjoy himself with the guys.
"I think it's important for him to get out here and get the feel of training camp. It's important for us because we need to get a feel for him, too."
Added cornerback Shawn Springs: "I don't think he has missed too much. I think he is a quick study. He was here for OTAs, so he learned a lot."
