Monk on Grimm's Induction: 'He Deserves It'

Art Monk and Russ Grimm seem to have a history of doing things together.

They were drafted in consecutive years by the Redskins, they were named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 1980s -- and now Grimm is joining Monk as a member of the Pro-Football Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony is Saturday, Aug. 7, in Canton, Ohio.

"You know I'm excited for him," Monk said. "Having been there, been fortunate enough to make it myself a few years ago -- it's more than we ever imagined and I know he's going to enjoy it. I'm excited for him, he really deserves it."

Monk was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 alongside fellow Redskin Darrell Green.

Monk finished his career with 940 receptions and 68 touchdowns and three Super Bowl championships, which he earned alongside Grimm in 1982, 1987 and 1991.

Grimm still has one more obstacle to overcome – the Hall of Fame induction speech.

At a Redskins alumni event on June 17 at Redskins Park, Monk offered some advice on how Grimm should prepare for his speech.

"Just take a couple of deep breaths and just let it go, let it come out," Monk said. "It's going to be emotional. Some guys are more emotional, but Russ isn't really the emotional type of guy. But I'm sure it's really going to impact his life."

The induction of another Redskins great into the Hall of Fame is just another reason for other alumni and current players to celebrate the franchise's tradition. Dozens of former Redskins, including Monk, were on hand at the Redskins alumni event on June 17.

"It's just good to let the current players know that we're here for them and that we support them, whether it's on the field issues or off the field issues," Monk said. "There's never been an official connection until now."
