Springs Still Recovering, But in Good Spirits

As Shawn Springs was carted off the field Sunday night, moments after a jarring hit that resulted in a concussion, he remembers asking director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer if he had at least made a game-saving tackle.

"Bubba said, 'Yeah, you did,'" Springs said. "Then about six in the morning, I'm watching SportsCenter and I saw the hit. I just said, 'Oh man, Bubba.'"

It was good to hear Springs laugh. Everyone in the organization was concerned for his welfare after Sunday's fourth-quarter hit from the Philadelphia Eagles' Josh Parry left him briefly unconscious and with a concussion.

On Wednesday, Springs was in good spirits at Redskins Park. Asked whether he thought the hit was legal, Springs said, 'Yeah, it was a good hit.'"

"I talked to a lot of the guys at the Eagles and Donovan [McNabb] called me that night in the hospital to find out if I was all right," Springs said. "He told me that [Parry] is a pretty good guy and that he wasn't trying for a cheap shot.

"Things happen in football. It was a good shot."

Springs said it was probably the hardest hit he had ever sustained in his football career. He didn't remember too much of the play itself. Instead, he remembers the drive in the ambulance to Virginia Hospital Center, where he stayed until early Monday morning.

"I remember I was hungry," he said. "I was in the ambulance and I was asking for donuts and cookies."

Springs has been officially ruled out for this Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. It is expected he'll be fully recovered for the Dec. 26 game at Dallas.

Springs played seven years with the Seattle Seahawks and was looking forward to his return to the west coast.

"I wanted to play this game," Springs said. "It's one of those games where they're struggling a little bit but they do pass the ball and we have an opportunity to make some plays.
