Brian Quick Happy To Be Back, Helping In Any Role He Can

Brian Quick didn't take it personal when the Redskins released him two weeks ago.

The seven-year wide receiver, who played in 11 games with the Redskins last season, had never been cut prior to a season starting, but his thigh injury later in training camp combined with the emergence of rookie Cam Sims, became factors in the team's decision to let him go.

Quick understood.

"It was just one of those things that happened, you know?" Quick said. "I was missing my guys, you know how it is. It's how it happens, you can't help it but to miss everything that you built as far as friendships and, you know, brotherhood and everything you built with the coaches and staff. It's just tough."

Cut to last Sunday evening, as the Redskins handled business against Arizona in dominant fashion, when Quick received a call from the team following the game. Both Sims and fellow rookie wide receiver Trey Quinn sustained high ankle sprains during the opener (both were later placed on IR this week), and the team knew it would need someone to help fill their spots.

It never hit Quick that their injuries could provide him a second opportunity. That's not the way you think when friends exit the game in pain.

"I didn't think anything, you know? I don't want to think about stuff like that," Quick said. "I was just really wishing them the best, and I was hoping nothing happened, to be honest with you. You never want to see that happen, you know, with anybody. I love them and they're great players and great people, but very unfortunate what happened."

Without having to move his things – he was still staying in Virginia – and still in football shape, Quick signed back with the team on Tuesday and was on the practice field Wednesday, reuniting with teammates and coaches he had forged close connections with over the last couple months.

"He's a great kid. We hated to let go of him in the first place because he's such a hard worker and had a good training camp," head coach Jay Gruden said. "The injury set him back. You know, the thigh injury set him back. When he did get healthy, Cam Sims emerged in his absence and then he got hurt a little bit and Trey Quinn had an emergence. Obviously, 'Mo' Harris was in a position he was in, so numbers-wise we had to let somebody go, but fortunately [for us] he's still on the streets and able to fill a void for us."

Depending on the health status of Maurice Harris, who has been slowly working back into practice after sustaining a concussion in August, Quick could play some offensive snaps against the Colts this Sunday. The bulk of his responsibilities, however, will remain on special teams, where he played throughout training camp.

"I'm gonna be ready to play," Quick said. "That's all that matters, be ready to play no matter what it is. You know, it's the season, so you know, nobody is really 100 percent during the season. You just kind of play through things, and, you know, that's how it has to go. You have people that help you out as far as teammates and coaches and everybody just around you. But as long as you stay focused and stay together, everything else, just work through everything else."

"He's ready to step up," locker mate Paul Richardson Jr. said. "I know he's happy, he's blessed with this opportunity and we're happy to have him back."
