Von Miller's 'biggest challenge': experiencing the D.C. food scene

07292025 Training Camp KC2024

Football hasn't been the only thing on linebacker Von Miller's mind since signing with the Washington Commanders. Along with running drills and lifting weights during training camp, the veteran pass rusher has also been exercising his tastebuds.

"The food is amazing," Miller laughed during a July 24 press conference. "The food is definitely amazing. Right when I got here, I was just driving by stuff and my mouth was watering and I was like, 'Dang, what's going on?' You got Korean barbecue and steak houses and they got everything. So, that might be my biggest challenge while I'm here. Just trying to stay away from all the food. Food was good in Buffalo, but options are just a little bit different up there. Here they got a little bit of everything, and I like it. I like it."

Having made stops with the Broncos, Rams and Bills throughout his 14-year NFL career, Miller knows a good food city when he sees one, and he sees something in Washington, D.C. The two-time Super Bowl champion's love of food started in his early childhood. Miller grew up raising chickens in his hometown of DeSoto, Texas, and majored in poultry science at Texas A&M.

In April of 2024, Miller partnered with local farmer Cameron Molberg to open the first USDA organic poultry processing facility in Texas for Greener Pastures Chicken, a farm-to-table poultry company that aims to provide high-quality, pasture-raised chickens with a focus on regenerative organic agriculture.

During the season, Miller's diet consists of clean, whole foods. He prioritizes high protein meals to fuel his workouts and eats snacks such as beef jerky when he needs an extra burst of energy. The biggest consistency in Miller's diet is timing. He tries to eat at the exact same time every day, with dinner no later than 9:00 p.m.

Miller's strict in-season diet combined with his game schedule makes it difficult for him to try new restaurants. Training camp off-days, however, provide the perfect excuse for Miller to check out the DMV food scene. He recently stopped at the iconic Ben's Chili Bowl, posting photos of himself at the H Street location on his Instagram story. From the looks of his post, Miller looks to have enjoyed his meal, leaving only a few fries on his plate.

Although Miller hasn't decided where he'll be dining next, with so many great restaurants to choose from, he won't be disappointed.
