Hey Redskins Nations! WRC Taryn here and I want to share with you my story of how breast cancer has affected my family.

My grandmother, Mrs. Williams, whom I affectionately call "Grannie", is one of my greatest influences and heroines. She is a two-time breast cancer survivor—a fighter and a true survivor! My Grannie has overcome a feat that not many people are able to do and has done the "impossible" twice.

I wasn't alive during her first bout with cancer in 1988, but doctors were able to catch the disease early. She began her first battle quickly and was in remission less than a year later. Early detection was a true blessing, and allowed my Grannie to have the opportunity to continue her beautiful life. It would be another sixteen years until she was told such alarming news again. The cancer had come back at 82 years young and it was going to be a tougher fight than before. It's not uncommon for cancer to reappear years later, so it's important to constantly check for changes regardless if symptoms are prevalent. Surrounded with love, prayers and a good medical team, Grannie battled for a second time and conquered. She was cancer free by 2006 and has continued being so since then!

Through her testament, I was inspired to advocate for breast cancer awareness. I became extremely active with Susan G. Komen's Walk for a Cure campaign & various events that supported the cause, wanting to be a part of something bigger than myself. Grace and perseverance are two words that perfectly describe my Grannie, mother of five, grandmother of three, auntie and cousin to many and a major staple in her Lynchburg, Virginia community. I couldn't be more proud and honored to know this amazing woman.
