Hail Mail | Roster questions and Lord of the Rings comps

It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another round of questions from fans in this week's edition of Hail Mail. We have some fun ones today, so let's dive into it.

@httr96: What's your opinion on lmc [Luke McCaffrey]? No targets last night is crazy.

I understand people want to see more from McCaffrey. He played 28 offensive snaps in the Bengals game, which on the surface should be plenty to at least get a few targets, but I believe there are a few reasons why he hasn't popped like fans hoped he would so far.

For starters, let's remember that Washington's game plan was clearly focused on running the ball. The Commanders had 30 combined rushing attempts compared to 19 pass attempts, so there really weren't many opportunities for receivers. Second, McCaffrey played in just over half of those snaps, and considering that Washington ran the ball on two-thirds of their plays, his lack of targets is easier to explain in that context.

Let's also remember that McCaffrey's usage is different than what it normally would be if Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown were on the field. With neither being at practice, McCaffrey has been on the outside more often. He would be lining up in the slot under normal circumstances, and while he has done well at times, it's not his natural position.

So, that's a long-winded way of saying that yes, of course I would love to have seen McCaffrey make more of an impact last night, but there are a lot of factors beyond his control that are affecting him.

@warren_gas77608: Can Washington Commanders go get Jameis Winston as their 3rd Quarterback?

Obviously, they could if they wanted to, but my question to that is what do you mean by that? If you mean a trade, that's a long shot for multiple reasons. They don't have a ton of draft capital to deal with in 2026, so they will want to keep that. Also, good luck trying to work with a divisional rival to improve your roster.

Things would be easier if Winston were to get cut, but I don't think that would happen with how different the Giants' quarterback situation is compared to the Commanders. And we still don't know whether the Commanders even want to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster.

Of course, similar to how Adam Peters made me wrong about Washington's pass rush by signing Von Miller, he could make that move. However, I stand by my belief that it's not a likely path.

@samm_in_va: Is there any reason to believe that our QB3 may not currently be on the roster?

Sure, but I think the Commanders are going to give Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson every opportunity to earn that job before making that decision.

@sacred_fandom: The depth of this team has been exposed for 2 preseason games, do you anticipate an influx of new personnel after the cuts to 53?

First, I'll push back slightly on the depth of the team being "exposed" over the last two games. Let's remember that the Commanders are going to cut 37 players in about a week, so a lot of the players people have had issues with will not even be on the practice squad. And most of those players won't even play in the regular season.

As for a possible influx of players, I could see them making a few moves like every other team in the league, but there won't be a massive overturning of the roster in the way you perhaps want. It just doesn't happen that way. It's simply too many people to introduce to the culture and the system in a short timeframe. All that's to say that the roster is going to consist of the players we have already seen, minus one or two others who might get signed after roster cut day.

@TheBurgundyZone: Using Lord of the Rings characters, which Commanders player fit their role?

This is such a fun question, and I'm thrilled that I get to combine my love for football and fantasy writing. I'm assuming you want me to stick to the original Fellowship, so I'll limit my answer to those nine.

Frodo: Jayden Daniels

This one is obvious. He's the main character of the story and carries the hope of the free peoples of Middle Earth (or in this case, the Commanders' fan base)

Sam: Zach Ertz

Sam is the emotional glue of the Fellowship and the most reliable of Frodo's friends. This makes him an easy choice for Ertz, who has been a reliable weapon for Daniels since he arrived in Washington.

Aragorn: Frankie Luvu

Aragorn is a natural leader and knows how to rally the people around him to his cause. This fits Luvu like a glove, and if the Commanders picked season-long captains, he would be a top contender.

Gandalf: Bobby Wagner

Like Gandalf, Wagner is experienced and wise. He's been a source of knowledge for his teammates, including Daniels, over the past year. And while Wagner isn't a wizard, being a future Hall of Famer isn't bad, either.

Gimli: Laremy Tunsil

Gimli would absolutely be an offensive lineman if he were a bit taller. He's strong, physical and a force of nature. This is also a perfect description for Tunsil, who has been a stalwart offensive tackle since he acquired via trade by Washington.

Legolas: Deebo Samuel

Legolas is clearly the athlete of the Fellowship. Although the group has plenty of capable people, Legolas can do just about everything better than them. In other words, he's versatile, which is exactly what the Commanders believe Samuel can be for them in this year's offense.

Boromir: John Bates

Although Aragorn gets most of the attention in the Fellowship (being heir of Elendil does have that effect), it's easy to forget that Boromir is one of the best warriors in Middle Earth. So, I'm giving Bates the Boromir role because of how dominant he is as a blocker.

Merry and Pippin: Tress Way, Tyler Ott and Matt Gay

People like to say Pippin is one of the most unnecessary characters in the Fellowship, but that's simply not true. He helped the Ents take Isengard from Saruman and played a role in saving Faramir from being burned alive, which would have ended the line of the Stewards. The story would have ended differently had Pippin not been involved, which is similar to how the Commanders wouldn't have had as much success if they had issues with their special teams unit.
