Hail Mail | D-line rotations and Conerly's development

The Washington Commanders have finished up their first week of camp, and while we have some answers about how the team will look during the 2025 season, there are still several questions on fans' minds. So, let's get it in this week's Hail Mail.

-- @SadeghiStu21366: Biggest winners in camp?

@BuhrandonL had a similar question to this, so I'll answer both at the same time.

I had a whole story on who stood out during the first week of camp, but just for the sake of adding someone different, I'll should shout out veteran Chris Moore. He had a really nice practice Tuesday morning and keeps finding ways to make plays. He's neither flashy nor in contention for one of the top receiver spots on the team, but he's a seasoned professional with 111 games under his belt and it shows. The bottom of the receiver group is extremely competitive, so he'll need to maintain that consistency in August, but I think he's got a leg up in that battle.

-- @_jaydmv: How has Conerly looked to you? I've heard some say he's been struggling.

Hey, Jay. I wouldn't necessarily say he's struggling. Conerly is raw but has some unique talents that you can't normally find in prospects. Have there been some rougher moments? Of course, but there have also been some good moments, too. He had a good pull block on Tuesday that opened up an explosive run and did a good job of picking up blitzes from Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner earlier in the week.

I think people need to remember that Conerly was a late first-round pick, which means there is going to be a learning curve with him. He's also literally the youngest player on the roster at 21 years old, and he's battling pass-rushers who are much older and far more experienced. NFL tackles also take a little longer to develop simply because of the difference in quality of opponents they see compared to college football.

While it hasn't been all good with Conerly -- and that's the case with every rookie -- there hasn't been anything to make me question the team's decision to take him with their first pick.

The Washington Commanders were in pads for the first time during Monday's practice.

-- @B_Law703: What have the rotations along the D-Line looked like throughout camp / who's lining up where?

There's now a lot of depth on the defensive line, and part of what makes that exciting is all the different combinations that can be used up front.

It's worth pointing out here that part of all this experimentation is to figure out which players fit the best together, so there's a chance that we don't see some of these groupings in the regular season. With that being said, Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw have gotten the most snaps with the starting defense. There was also a grouping that featured Von Miller and Luvu as the edge defenders with Payne and Dorance Armstrong as the interior players, which could be deadly for opposing offenses.

As for your other question about whether Conerly could split time with Andrew Wylie until he is ready, similar to how Brandon Coleman and Cornelius Lucas did last year, I think it's certainly possible. That strategy worked well last season, and the best way for an offensive lineman to develop is to get reps in games. We'll have to see how Conerly does against the New England Patriots next week before determining if that is a viable option.

-- @sebastian_ames3: Is it too early to tell whether Sinnott is going to be involved more this year 👀

Maybe a little too early, but they are trying to get him the ball more. Dan Quinn said he was excited about Ben Sinnott's development before the start of training camp, and the athleticism that the coaches loved when they drafted him is still there. He's had a few impressive catches, and if he can keep that up, I can see him getting more involved in the offense besides being a blocker.

@nextmediaxyz also asked if we would see more 12 personnel (one running back and two tight ends) with Sinnott developing, and I think we could see more of that regardless of Sinnott's growth. Zach Ertz hasn't dropped off, but the Commanders also believe John Bates can be more of a pass-catcher. Bates hasn't caught the ball much and has been more of a blocker, but he has reliable hands. The Commanders also want to dominate the line of scrimmage, and one of the best ways to do that is by getting really good in two tight end sets.

We have a few shorter questions, so we'll move into rapid fire here:

-- @DaveSteckel3: Any coaches standing out?

The easy answer is Quinn. The guy just has a finger on the pulse of the team and has done a good job of setting the standard for the 2025 season.

-- @jcohen710: How's Kliff Kingsbury's offense looking so far in terms of tempo and formations? Any noticeable differences from last year?

The operation is definitely cleaner and crisper than a year ago. That's to be expected with Kingsbury coming back, but it seems like everyone knows their role and exactly how to execute.

-- @bmurphy28: Will we see more of Gabe Taylor?

He's currently not on the roster, and I don't expect him to be at this point in the year. I hope he finds a team soon, because he does have some talent that could be useful.

-- @BadKidKota: Where will the Super Bowl parade route end at?

I love the energy, and hopefully we get there! But for now, the team is focused on Week 1 against the Giants.

-- @D_Cope: Who hasn't had a good start to camp?

The sun. That thing is actively trying to burn us all alive.
