Commanders sign DE Charles Omenihu

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Commanders announced today that they have signed defensive end Charles Omenihu. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Omenihu (6-5, 280) is a six-year veteran who entered the league after being drafted by the Houston Texans in the fifth-round (161st overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. In his career, Omenihu has appeared in 95 games and recorded 129 total tackles, 23.0 sacks, 66 quarterback hits, 21 tackles for loss, eight passes defensed and six forced fumbles.

Prior to signing with Washington, Omenihu had stints with the Houston Texans (2019-21), San Francisco 49ers (2021-23) and the Kansas City Chiefs (2023-26).

While with Kansas City from 2023-2025, Omenihu played in a total of 34 games with two starts and totaled 62 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 25 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two passes defensed. During the 2023 season, Omenihu recorded a career high of 7.0 sacks.

In 2022, he saw action in all 17 games with three starts and totaled 20 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and three tackles for loss.

During the 2019-21 seasons he played in 44 games, starting in seven, with 30 total tackles, 7.0 sacks, 21 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Omenihu has played in 14 postseason games with 22 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hits, five tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles.

Omenihu, a Rowlett, Texas native, attended Rowlett High School. He played collegiately at the University of Texas for 51 games, recording 90 tackles, 23.5 sacks, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was named Big 12 Defensive lineman of the Year and first team All-Big 12 by the Associated Press during the 2018 season.
