We're getting into what they call the "dog days" of training camp, which means it's nearly time for the Washington Commanders to square off against another team. After going through a joint practice in New England, they will take on the Patriots in their only road preseason game on Aug. 8.
Fans have questions, and I have answers. So, let's get to it.
-- @DubP23: Last year they brought in a punter .. I'm hearing things about a kicker. How is our kicking situation? Who stands out on Special teams? Who makes the 53 because of it?
Hey, Dub. Not sure where you're getting your information from, but as far as I know, there aren't any plans to bring in another kicker. Matt Gay has been the only kicker on the roster for a while now, and if there were plans, I imagine they would have already brought somebody in to compete. Gay is doing fine in camp, and fans should expect him to be the guy during the season.
As for who is standing out, Jaylin Lane has done some good things in terms of his athleticism. It's difficult to really get a good hold of that position right now, though, because they aren't facing another team.
-- @JayDanielsMVP: How has Jordan Magee or Dominique Hampton looked? Haven't heard much about them.
I think both have been solid and made some plays. Magee wasn't at practice yesterday, although we have no idea why, so I don't want to speculate. It could be injury-related, or it could be nothing. Perhaps Dan Quinn will get asked about it tomorrow.
I've been trying to talk with Hampton for a story about this topic for a while. Ken Norton Jr. was very complimentary of him in June, and he's flashed at times, although he's still shown some growing pains. Like several other players, I think he will have a lot to prove against New England.
-- @legend96_96: How many QBs will be kept? If we assume Magee, Wagner, and Luvu are locks, is there room for all 3 of Hampton, Medrano, Bellore? How does JJB look, and is there a chance he becomes more than a situational role player?
Okay, I'll answer all of these with a few sentences:
1) I get the feeling the Commanders want to keep three because they want to have the benefit of using an emergency quarterback. However, there's a chance they keep two if a certain position really stands out.
2) I think so, especially if you consider some as more of pass rushers than traditional linebackers. It might seem like Bellore is the odd player out, but he has serious special teams value.
3) I think the Commanders are hoping Javontae Jean-Baptiste steps up and offers more as a pass-rusher. He's done that on occasion, but as I have said before, this New England trip will be a big measuring stick.
-- @TreyTwistt: Which receiver outside of the 5 perceived roster locks (Terry, Deebo, Brown, Lane, LMC) has stood out the most? Haven't heard much about Gallup/Osborn.
Chris Moore has stood out the most to me. He has been pretty consistent with an explosive catch each day and has gotten a lot of work with the starters. If I had to make a roster prediction today, I would put him as the sixth wideout.
-- iHeartSportsDC: Yes. Are "Zach's Snackz" coming back? We're hungry!
I have some plans in the works for Snackz to make a comeback! It's tough during the season, of course, but I think there's a way to make it work. Stay tuned!
