The Washington Commanders have announced that guard Sam Cosmi has been designated to return to practice from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list among other roster moves.

The decision by the Commanders opens up Cosmi's 21-day window to return to the active roster. The Commanders can choose to activate Cosmi at any point over the next three weeks. Once the 21-day window expires, the Commanders must choose whether to activate him or return him to the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list for the rest of the year.

Cosmi, who suffered an ACL injury during the Divisional Round of last year's playoffs, has been working hard over the past nine months to return to action. Head coach Dan Quinn has been complimentary of Cosmi's effort, saying that he has hit all his markers to give himself a chance at returning to play.

Cosmi's return, whenever that might be, will help bolster an offensive line that has contributed to the second-best rushing attack in the NFL through four games. While three of the Commanders' offensive line spots -- left tackle, center and right tackle -- appear to have long-term answers in Laremy Tunsil, Tyler Biadasz and rookie Josh Conerly Jr., the team has shuffled players in and out of both guard spots this season. The current lineup features former seventh-round pick Chris Paul at left guard and veteran Andrew Wylie at right guard.

Cosmi was one of the league's better guards last season, allowing just one sack and posting a pass-blocking grade of 74.3. He received the team's second-highest offensive grade from Pro Football Focus and tied Biadasz for the best pass-blocking efficiency grade.

The Commanders announced three other roster moves on Wednesday, starting with placing defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste on the Reserve/Injured list after the 2024 seventh-round pick suffered a torn pec against the Atlanta Falcons. Quinn did not say the injury was season-ending but that it would keep him sidelined for "a while." The Commanders filled the open roster spot by signing cornerback Antonio Hamilton Jr. from the practice squad.

The Commanders also added to their practice squad by signing veteran Robbie Chosen, a former undrafted free agent from Temple. Chosen, who started his professional career with the New York Jets, has appeared in 122 games with 86 starts. He has 380 receptions on 682 targets for 5,087 yards and 30 touchdowns. Chosen has also played in games for the Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins.
