LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Commanders announced today that they have signed safety Nick Cross. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cross (6-0, 212) is entering his fifth season after being selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the third-round (96th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent the previous four season with Indianapolis and played in 67 games, including all 17 games each of the last two seasons. Cross has 304 total tackles, five interceptions, 12 passes defensed and 3.5 sacks on his career
In 2025, Cross posted a career highs in sacks (2.5) and quarterback hits (6), while tying career highs in passes defensed (5) and games started (17). He also tied the league lead for most runs stops resulting in an unsuccessful offensive play among safeties with 33, according to Next Gen Stats.
Cross became a full-time starter for Indianapolis in 2024 and totaled 145 tackles, three interceptions, six tackles for loss and five passes defensed, which all set new career highs. In his first two seasons (2022-23), Cross saw action in 33 games with four starts, and tallied a fumble recovery in just his sixth career game in Week 6 of the 2022 season.
A native of Bowie, Maryland, Cross grew up a fan of the Burgundy and Gold, and attended DeMatha Catholic High School. He went on to play collegiately at the University of Maryland for three seasons (2019-2021). Cross earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten in each of his three seasons at Maryland (2019, 2020, 2021). As a senior, Cross started all 13 games and led the team with three interceptions.
