Deebo Samuel set to benefit from Terry McLaurin back in Commanders' offense

With wide receiver Terry McLaurin officially signed to a contract extension, "Get Loud" podcast hosts Michael Jenkins and Fred Smoot were quick to point out how the addition of McLaurin will allow the Washington Commanders' wide receiving corps to play to their strengths.

"If I'm anybody on this roster excited to see Terry besides [quarterback Jayden Daniels], it is Deebo Samuel Sr.," Smoot said.

Last season, Washington's offense ranked fifth in scoring and seventh in total offense but 17th in passing offense. Having both McLaurin and Samuel as options for Daniels could help create more opportunities for creativity from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

"This might be one of Deebo's best years because of Terry," Smoot said. "Terry gets the coverage pushed to him. It's just attention. Deebo will benefit from that and blossom from that."

Last season, Samuel put up 670 receiving yards and 3 receiving touchdowns for the San Francisco 49ers. His most valuable asset has been his ability to break tackles and create explosive plays by putting up 3,594 yards after contact throughout his career.

McLaurin has consistently made a statement on Washington's offense, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards each of the last five seasons of his career. He also set the franchise's single season record with 13 receiving touchdowns in 2024. While his numbers are notable, according to Smoot, the intangibles are what make McLaurin standout.

"If you don't have glaring identifiers, you become hard to study, hard to prepare for, and when Terry is playing with that edge, it makes it even harder. He's not the fastest, but have you ever seen anybody catch him from behind?" Smoot said.

As a former defensive back, Smoot also included that because McLaurin is so well-rounded as a receiver, saying, "You have to gameplan differently."

A crucial part to this offense, the upgrades to Washington's wide receiver corps in bringing back McLaurin and adding Samuel will help to create more options for Daniels as he enters his sophomore season.
