Final thoughts | Dan Quinn takes over defensive play-calling duties

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn addressed the media the day after the team's 44-22 loss to the Detroit Lions. Here are some of his final thoughts before the Commanders turn the page to the Miami Dolphins in Week 11.

-- Quinn started his press conference by announcing a change for the defense: he will be taking over as the play caller for defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., who he said "took the news like the pro he is."

"As a defensive staff, including Joe, we're all consumed by getting it right, and that's exactly what we intend to do."

Quinn said the defense "felt off" after watching the film from the Lions game and thought now was the time to make a change. Whitt will work with the rest of the staff to plan and prepare for each week's game. He will return to the press box to provide "the coverage and the things that we need to do."

"I'm fortunate that we've been in that battle rhythm together during our time together in Dallas. And so, we're going to try to slip into that spot as quickly as we can."

Quinn said it was not an easy decision, but he hopes that the Commanders will "see...the execution, the consistency that we're searching for."

"We've been digging for it. We haven't had it; we haven't found it. And so, that type of consistency and execution, that's what I'm after, and that's the only reason behind the move."

-- Quinn also made some announcements regarding the team's injured players. Cornerback Trey Amos fractured his fibula, which will "knock him out for a while." As far as the other injured players, Terry McLaurin will travel with the team and continue his rehab process but will not play. Quarterback Jayden Daniels will not travel with the team but is "doing all the right stuff" in his rehab process.

-- Daron Payne, who was ejected from Sunday's game after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and suspended for one game by the NFL, will also not travel with the team, per league rules.

-- Marcus Mariota said after the game that the team needs to recalibrate its expectations for the rest of the season. Quinn added his thoughts to that sentiment, saying "we gotta put everything we can into this game and where we're at."

"There's not a player that I respect more than Marcus, so his insights are usually spot on, and you'd have to ask him, but we're not hitting the mark. It's fair to say that, that we're not hitting, doing the things we need to do to be who we want to be."

-- Quinn capped off his press conference by saying the team needs to develop more consistency.

"Being in this slump that we've been in, emotionally, it's hard, but...you have to lift one another up. You have to perform to get those results as well. And I just felt the up-and-down nature of our performances have not led to us performing better. And we're going to dig in hard on that, man."
